BILL MADE LAW
Just 4% of New York’s energy comes from wind and solar power – less than 1/5th of the renewable energy generated in Texas. Enter: the Build Public Renewables Act, a bill that would make NY the nation’s leader in building publicly-owned renewable energy while providing good green jobs, a just transition, and an end to fossil fuel pollution.
Years of organizing had brought the bill to the brink of passing, but it faced entrenched opposition from the fossil fuel industry and their political cronies – especially the newly-elected Governor Kathy Hochul, whose unusually close race in reliably blue New York had sparked much recriminations about her regressive politics.
Polling showed that more New Yorkers supported building public renewables than voted for the governor. We made sure that she knew it, and that New Yorkers could make sure that she heard us loud and clear.
We launched a statewide campaign that centered the power of New Yorkers to demand a green future from the governor, and provided the tools for them to make those demands.
The campaign was brought to life across social media, paid and earned media, PR, and even a series of out-of-home placements smack dab in Albany, where every legislator, staff, and especially the governor could see it.
We generated mass awareness through press and op ed placements in key media outlets, from local papers to national publications and TV, as well as influencer partnerships.
Most people don’t get their news from the news. That’s why we created ‘Statehouse Rock’, a regularly published comic in the vein of Schoolhouse Rock’s “I’m Just A Bill”, that tracked the twists and turns in the passage of the Build Public Renewables Act.
The Build Public Renewables Act is now the law of the land
